Most career-change advice at 40 starts with a new job. Start with the one you have. Twenty years of experience is an asset, and AI has just repriced part of it. Before you move, you need to know which part, what is still scarce, and what travels with you. That is a balance sheet, not a job search.
What actually changed
Your experience paid a premium because what you knew was scarce, and the scarcity lived in you. Much of that knowledge, the methods, the judgement calls, the first drafts, has now been documented and prompted into tools. A junior with the tool covers work that used to need years.
The firm keeps the capability. The write-down lands on you, because you own the asset. Nobody is coming to manage that for you.
Run your career like a business
A business facing a repriced market does not panic and does not wait. It takes stock. Six moves, in order.
Number your runway: how long before AI reaches most of your core tasks. Identify your depreciating assets: the work AI now does as well as you, for less, so you stop leading with it. Reinvest in appreciating assets: the judgement, trust and context that gain value as AI improves. Make your value visible & portable: write down how you actually work, make it known beyond your corridor, keep your own record of what you solved. Reprice early, and claim your stake: set your price before the restructure sets it for you. Future-proof your expertise: the one asset worth more each time the ground moves.
The moment most people miss
At some point you will be asked to document your expertise, train the tool, or bring the juniors up to speed. That is not a favour. It is a transfer of the one asset you have left.
It is also your strongest negotiating moment. Ask for something real: recognition, a raise, time, a role that uses what only you can do. The transfer will happen either way. The only question is whether you are paid for it.
Then decide whether to move
With the audit done, a career change becomes a decision with data. You know which of your tasks are anchored and which are gone. You know which skills and relationships leave with you. You can see whether the next role buys more runway, or just a new title on the same depreciating work.
Your Career Audit gives you that picture in one sitting. Free, private, and your employer never sees it.
